Microsoft is rolling out a significant update to Xbox Game Pass . The tech giant has announced that it is making its popular cloud streaming feature available to subscribers of the lower-priced Core and Standard tiers of Xbox Game Pass. The change has already taken effect for some users, and a full rollout is expected in the coming weeks. This move is part of the service's ongoing evolution to make it more appealing to a broader audience. The Core tier, which replaced Xbox Live Gold in 2023, and the Standard tier will now have access to cloud gaming , a feature previously limited to the more expensive Ultimate tier.
What this change will mean for Xbox Game Pass users
In a blog post, Microsoft revealed significant updates to its subscription service. Starting August 27, members of the Xbox Insider program will be able to test an update that brings Xbox Cloud Gaming to the Core and Standard tiers.
Until now, streaming games has been only included with the Game Pass Ultimate tier. Microsoft also stated it is "expanding the ways players can experience PC gaming through Xbox Game Pass" by giving Core and Standard subscribers access to PC versions of select games.
As mentioned earlier, these changes are currently limited to Xbox Insider program members, with a broader rollout expected in the coming weeks. However, Microsoft has not provided a release date for general availability.
Given the popularity of Xbox Cloud Gaming among Ultimate subscribers, this news may not come as a surprise. It follows shortly after Microsoft shared that it was exploring a "more affordable" cloud gaming–focused service
In a recent interview with The Verge, Jason Ronald, Microsoft’s VP of Next Generation, said that cloud gaming remains a highly used feature. He said, "One of the things we see is there’s a lot of players who use Game Pass Ultimate to access the cloud.”
With such strong engagement, expanding the feature to lower tiers seems to be a logical step to attract more subscribers.
