Berhampur: People of Ganjam on Sunday celebrated after chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi announced upgrade of five Notified Area Councils (NAC)s into municipalities and two new NACs for the district.
With these, there will be 20 urban local bodies (ULB) in Ganjam, the highest in the state. These are the Berhampur Municipal Corporation (BeMC), six municipalities and 13 NACs.
The CM announced upgrade of Aska, Bhanjangar, Chhatrapur, Kabisurya Nagar and Polasara NACs in Ganjam into municipalities. Patrapur and Jagannath Prasad will be the new NACs in the district.
Saroj Padhy and Krushna Chandra Nayak, MLAs of Aska and Chhatrapur, respectively, thanked the chief minister for upgrading the existing NACs into municipalities.
Manoranjan Dyansamantara, MLA of Chikiti, said the people of Patrapur area have been demanding to declare Patrapur panchayat into an NAC for several years. "Patrapur has all criteria to be declared an NAC. During elections, we had promised to declare Patrapur as an NAC. We thank the CM for fulfilling the long-standing demand of the people of Patrapur," he said.
"This indicates the BJP govt's priority to Ganjam," said Saroj Sabat, BJP's Ganjam unit president.
BJD's Ganjam district president and former MLA (Berhampur), Bikram Kumar Panda, said the Naveen Patnaik-led govt had declared to turn Sheragada and Kukudakhandi into NACs. "This govt, however, ignored the demand due to political motives," he alleged.
