Sausage casserole is tastier and smokier when you add 1 other meat to the pot

Sausage casserole is a beloved comfort food-warm, hearty, and perfect for chilly evenings. Popular in most of the UK households, the dish typically features British-style pork sausages simmered in a rich tomato-based sauce with vegetables like onions, carrots, and peppers.

Many recipes include beans (like cannellini or butter beans) and herbs such as thyme or rosemary for added depth. It's often served with mashed potatoes, crusty bread, or rice. However, food expert has suggested adding one other meat to the recipe and it will give you the "juicier" flavour.

A food expert shared the ingredient while writing the recipe for Don't Go Bacon My Heart and said that adding bacon to this recipe will bring in more flavours and the result will be "tastier".

The expert said: "Bacon pumps heaps of gorgeous, smoky flavour into the sauce and pairs beautifully with the sausages."

To make this rich and comforting sausage casserole, start by browning the sausages in a casserole dish with a little olive oil-just enough to give them a golden, charred exterior.

Set them aside and use the leftover oil to cook bacon until it begins to crisp, then add chopped carrots and onions, cooking until the onions soften, the expert has suggested.

The next step is to stir in garlic, followed by tomato purée, and let it cook briefly before adding red wine to deglaze the pan. Once the wine reduces slightly, pour in stock and chopped tomatoes, then add herbs, potatoes, Worcestershire sauce, and the sausages.

The expert then urges to stir well, scraping up any flavourful bits from the bottom, and bring to a gentle simmer.

Cover and cook on low heat for 90 minutes, then uncover and simmer for another 20-30 minutes until the sauce thickens.

Remove the herb sprigs and bay leaves, season to taste, and serve with crusty buttered bread for a satisfying meal.
