Patios will be algae-free if you ditch chemicals for 20p natural solution

Damp weather and shorter days help algae grow fast on patio surfaces. Fallen leaves can also be to blame for patio stains, while moss and weeds grow in the joints and trap moisture. This causes the patio to become slippery, and families often stop using it because it feels unsafe or it's unsightly. Cleaning and maintaining the garden is also much harder in winter, as wet conditions slow drying, loosen more dirt, and make stains return much quicker.

However, paving experts at Reclaimed Brick Company have shared a formula they've been using for years in their trade, and it simply involves vinegar and orange peel. While it takes a week to make, the experts said that this is the "best natural method" to use, and it involves using a fruit 20p fruit. To make the citrus vinegar, simply save citrus peels in a jar before covering them with white vinegar and leaving them for a week.

Strain it, then dilute the liquid with warm water before using. The experts said: "The natural citrus oils help fight algae film and leave a fresh smell. The mild acidity loosens grime without harsh chemicals."

The pros added: "Sweep the patio first to remove loose leaves, soil and grit. Then, pre-wet the patio with warm water. This will help the diluted spray to spread evenly."

Next, make the natural cleaning spray by mixing one part strained citrus vinegar with four parts warm water. Test a small corner, then apply with a spray bottle or watering can. Scrub with a stiff outdoor brush in short strokes, working in sections.

Leave for five to 10 minutes so the suds can work on the film before rinsing with clean water, guiding dirty water away from flower beds and drains.

It's as simple as that, your patio should be gleaming. For tougher stains, reapply the solution, but do not be tempted by white vinegar.

The experts warned: "Do not mix vinegar with bleach, ammonia, or any other cleaners. Never use strong acids on limestone or very soft limestone; always test first and keep the mix mild.

"If using a pressure washer, avoid weak pointing, soft sandstone or old bricks because high pressure can blow out joints, open pores and leave striping.

"Regular cleaning prevents algae, moss and grime from building up, which can make the area slippery and shorten the life of the paving."

Simple care, such as sweeping leaves and washing the slabs with the citrus vinegar mix, helps to keep the space clean and saves on bigger repairs later down the line.
