Manchester United defender Harry Maguire disagreed with Red Devils manager Ruben Amorim as he assessed the importance of his side's victory against Liverpool. The 13-time Premier League champions climbed to ninth in the Premier League after securing a 2-1 win at Anfield.

United went into the encounter on Merseyside in search of back-to-back Premier League victories for the first time in the Amorim era following their 2-0 win over Sunderland last time out. And the visitors took the lead two minutes into the match as Bryan Mbeumo fired the ball beyond Giorgi Mamardashvili after Alexis Mac Allister had been left nursing a head injury in the centre of the pitch following an accidental clash with Virgil van Dijk. Cody Gakpo drew Liverpool level 12 minutes from time after an intense spell of pressure from the home side. But Maguire headed in the winning goal in the 84th minute as the Red Devils clinched their fourth league win of the season.

After the match, Amorim talked down the significance of a win at Anfield as he told Sky Sports: "It's one more game. We know the importance of the game, but if we start feeling that one game is more important than the other, that is the biggest mistake we can make."

But Maguire didn't share his manager's sentiments as he explained during his post-match interview: "It means everything.

"They had had the better of us over the last few years and it's not been good for our club.

"We have not given our fans enough days like today, so it has been a long time coming, coming to this ground and picking up three points.

"It is not just three points to the club and to the boys. I have been coming to this ground for seven years now and to not get three points have been tough. It's for the fans and I hope they had a great night tonight.

"It is nice to have one over Liverpool. Football is all about memories and making special memories. I am sure all the fans will go home with memories - we will all go home happy."

Maguire, who joined United from Leicester in an £80million deal in 2019, was handed just his third Premier League start of the campaign by Amorim.

The 32-year-old lined up at the centre of a back three alongside Matthijs de Ligt and Luke Shaw as he produced a man-of-the-match performance.

And the defender, who has won 64 caps for England, will be desperate to retain his starting position when the Red Devils host Brighton in their next game on Saturday.
