First Made in India Chip: India took a historic step in the semiconductor sector by introducing its first fully indigenous 32-bit microprocessor, "Vikram". Union Electronics and Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnav presented this processor to Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the Semicon India 2025 conference. Test chips of four approved projects were also displayed on this occasion.
Vikram processor made for a space mission
This processor developed by ISRO's Semiconductor Laboratory, will prove helpful in the harsh conditions of spacecraft and launch vehicles. According to Union Minister Vaishnav, this achievement is a big success for India in the direction where the country is now reducing its dependence on foreign chips and moving towards technological self-reliance.

Vaishnav further said that at present the construction of five semiconductor units is going on in the country, out of which the pilot line of one has been completed. Two more units will start production in the coming months. Apart from this, the design process of five new units is also in progress.
He said that all the global partners for chip manufacturing are present in India.
The result of Prime Minister Modi's visionVaishnav said that the credit for this mission goes to the vision of Prime Minister Modi. Just 3.5 years ago, we started the India Semiconductor Mission. Today the world is looking towards India with confidence. Work is going on at a fast pace on five units and today the first 'Made-in-India' chip has been handed over to PM Modi.
India becomes a trusted center in global instabilityAddressing the investors, Vaishnav said that while the whole world is struggling with policy instability and uncertainty, India remains a beacon of stability and growth. He also said that in the last decade, India's electronics production has increased six times and exports eight times. Due to increasing domestic demand and stable policies, India is the most suitable place for investment.
India on its way to becoming a global semiconductor hubVikram processors are just the beginning of India's semiconductor ambitions. According to a report by Bastion Research, about 20% of the world's chip design engineers are in India. This is why India is already an important part of the global chip design. Big companies like Qualcomm, Intel, Nvidia, Broadcom and MediaTek have set up their large R&D and design centers in Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Noida, further strengthening India's role in the global chip ecosystem.
A big step towards self-reliant IndiaThe Government of India launched the Semicon India Programme in 2021 under which incentives worth about Rs 76,000 crore are being given to attract global manufacturers. The launch of the Vikram processor and new semiconductor projects show that India is not only moving towards technological self-reliance but is also moving towards becoming a hub of global chip manufacturing and design in the times to come.
